TO HONOR VETERANS, NEW TUNNEL TO BE NAMED AFTER LIBERTY

Romney and legislative leaders quickly agree on name for Central Artery tunnel

In honor of all veterans from Massachusetts who have fought to preserve freedom, Governor Mitt Romney today joined with Republican and Democratic leaders of the Legislature to announce they have agreed to name the new Interstate 93 tunnel the “Liberty Tunnel.”

Romney - acting in concert with Senate President Robert Travaglini, House Speaker Thomas Finneran, Senate Minority Leader Brian Lees and House Minority Leader Brad Jones - said the war in Iraq serves as a “fitting reminder of the sacrifices made in the name of liberty.”

In addition to the Liberty Tunnel, Romney and the legislative leadership agreed to name the tunnel connecting Interstate 90 to the Ted Williams Tunnel after former U.S. House Speaker Thomas P. O'Neill, Jr., who was instrumental in securing federal funding for the Big Dig.

Legislation naming the tunnels will be filed tomorrow. The Mass Pike connector opened earlier this year and the I-93 northbound tunnel opening is scheduled for Thursday.

Agreement on the tunnel naming was reached today at the weekly meeting of the legislative leadership and the Governor.

“It is with deep appreciation that we honor our veterans by naming our newest tunnel the 'Liberty Tunnel' in recognition of the individuals who have fought so courageously throughout our Commonwealth's history to protect our freedoms,” said Romney.

Senate President Travaglini agreed, saying, “We couldn't have agreed upon a more appropriate name for the tunnel. Liberty has been a prize our forefathers endured great personal sacrifice to achieve in the founding of this nation. It's a value we continue to cherish and protect in the Commonwealth.”

Travaglini added, “And to add to the project the name of probably the greatest champion of liberty - our beloved House Speaker, the late Tip O'Neill, is truly fitting.”

Speaker Finneran said, “During the American Revolution, Boston was known as the cradle of liberty. What started as an idea became a reality on our soil and shaped our great nation. I can think of no tribute more suiting than to name the modern marvel of the depressed artery after an ideal that is a basis of our nation.”

Finneran added, “As for the Tip O'Neill Tunnel, this man was a tower of strength and a leading light for all the citizens of the Commonwealth and the nation.”

Senate Minority Leader Brian P. Lees, said, “The 'Liberty Tunnel' is a wonderful and fitting tribute to a state that played a critical role in helping our country achieve its freedom.”

Bradley H. Jones, Jr., Minority Leader in the House, added, “As the cradle of freedom and the birthplace of our democracy, I can think of no more appropriate name than the 'Liberty Tunnel.'”
