ROMNEY NOMINATES JUDGE ROBERT C. RUFO TO SUPERIOR COURT
Governor Mitt Romney today nominated District Court Judge Robert C. Rufo of Harwichport to the position of Associate Justice of the Superior Court.
Judge Rufo was first appointed to the bench in 1996 as a Circuit Justice in the District Court. The following year, he became Associate Justice of the West Roxbury Division of the District Court, which is now the Boston Municipal Court.
Prior to his appointment to the judiciary, Judge Rufo was the Sheriff of Suffolk County from 1986 to 1996. From 1977 to 1986, he served as Special Sheriff and General Counsel for the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Department. Previous to his work in the Sheriff’s office, he was a solo practitioner for two years.
For the past seven years, Judge Rufo has co-chaired the West Roxbury Court’s “Reinventing Justice Project” with First Justice Kathleen Coffey. In 2004, he received the Pioneer Institute for Public Policy Research’s Better Government Award for work on this initiative.
Judge Rufo is a member of the adjunct faculty at Suffolk University Law School, New England School of Law and Boston College. He graduated cum laude with his bachelor’s degree from Boston College and received his law degree from Suffolk University Law School. Judge Rufo also received a master’s degree in public administration from Harvard University in 1991.
