2004 CHANUKAH PROCLAMATION

WHEREAS: Religious diversity and freedom to exercise religion is an important part of the Commonwealth's history and is protected by Article II of the Constitution of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts; and
WHEREAS: The Festival of Chanukah is being celebrated throughout the world December 7th through December 15th, to commemorate the victory of a small, greatly outnumbered army that prevailed against the forces of religious persecution; and
WHEREAS: A great miracle followed this victory when a small jar of oil meant to last for only a single day kept the Menorah lit for eight days, bringing joy to all who had fought for the right to teach and worship freely; and
WHEREAS: This miracle of light is preserved by the Jewish community everywhere through the lighting of the Menorah, symbolizing the ideals of religious freedom and offering a beacon of hope to all those who are still subjected to spiritual oppression; and
WHEREAS: This annual kindling of the Menorah at the State House. confirms the faith of all people in the universal right to religious expression and spiritual freedom in the Commonwealth and throughout the world,
NOW, THEREFORE, I, MITT ROMNEY, Governor of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, do hereby proclaim December 7ththrough December 15th, 2004 to be
CHANUKAH WEEK
and urge all the citizens of the Commonwealth to take cognizance of this event and participate fittingly in its observance
