Governor Mitt Romney and Accountability

Governor Mitt Romney believes in accountability. He has attempted to give every department of government "oversight and accountability", including the Massachusetts system of corrections, park system, Turnpike Authority, Education, and others. He has argued that that good teachers should be rewarded and held accountable for their results. It has also been said that Romney's health insurance plan holds individuals accountable or makes them responsible to purchase their health insurance, similar to the way drivers need auto insurance.

One of the times that I was listening to Rush Limbaugh and thought, you know there is substance to this guy, is when he said that there is no logical difference between social and fiscal conservatives. Both of them believe institutions should encourage accountability, and individuals should take personal responsibility for the decisions they make in life.

Of course, you can’t go too far to either extreme. People can’t be help accountable, if they don’t have equal opportunities. You can tell kids that it is their fault if their life is terrible when they don’t do well at school as long as their schools meet some minimum requirements. That is why I like the effort to reform schools.

Romney has said, “Some kids, particularly certain minority populations, are falling behind. Horace Mann said that education was the great equalizer. But in too many of our schools today, that is not being achieved. I believe that the failure of education in urban schools is the civil rights issue of our generation.” Governor Mitt Romney, 2006 State of the State Address (January 2006)

So anyways individuals should be held accountable for their actions. Government agencies should be held accountable for providing equal opportunity, as far as the Government can. Of course the government can not give ever child a good home life, but it should treat poor kids just as well or better than rich kids, when these children are within its care.

If you get 4 D's your freshman year at college, and you say stupid things all the time (like John Kerry) and people won't give you very much respect. You reap what you sow. It's the Law of the Harvest, and democrats don't like it. I think one of the most important words for conservatives to use is the word "accountability" here are some examples that I was able to find that show how Mitt uses this word in his press releases. Do you have any additional examples? I would love to hear from you!

Accountability Quotes From Romney

  • “It is time to quit tinkering around the edges with an organization that over the years has proven immune to serious reform. Massachusetts taxpayers and the people who use our state recreational facilities deserve better. Under my plan, they will finally get the accountability and cost-efficiency we should all expect from those entrusted with the management of our public funds.”

  • “Billions of taxpayer dollars were invested into the Central Artery project, yet no direct oversight of this project by state government exists. Political accountability and fiscal responsibility are the twin principles behind these sorely needed reforms.”

  • “With this merger, we will once and for all put an end to the blame shifting that occurred during the financial mismanagement of the Big Dig, and achieve sustainable savings by managing our roadways more efficiently.”

  • “Today marks a significant move towards reforming our correctional system. For too long, our system of corrections has operated in the shadows of government, with very little oversight and accountability. It’s time to shine a light on how we can better improve the management of our prisons.”

Press Releases

  • 01-13-2005; ROMNEY DELIVERS 2005 STATE OF THE COMMONWEALTH ADDRESS, Focusing on education, calls for more accountability, help in troubled urban districts

Actions

  • To bring the unfunded pension liability under control and increase accountability, Romney’s proposal requires all future changes that increase the state’s costs – like early retirement packages – be calculated and paid for within three years.

  • “We’re making progress, there’s no doubt about it, but we have more work to do. These test scores reflect the hard work and creativity of our students, teachers and schools, but they also reveal that some are still struggling. It is increasingly critical that we advance bold reforms to ensure greater accountability and performance in every classroom.”

Quotes from Others on Romney's Accountability

  • “After the death of my daughter, we were shut out of the Board of Registration in Medicine disciplinary hearings. I looked into my heart and decided I needed to do something to make sure other families have a voice in the system. This law ensures that patients and their families have due process, accountability and fairness when they have a complaint before the board.”

  • “I was honored to serve on the Turnpike Board. I was there to represent the toll-payer and the taxpayer, and every day fought to insure greater accountability at the Big Dig. By appointing Secretary Grabauskas to the Board, Governor Romney again has shown his commitment to true reform of government. Secretary Grabauskas is a proven and successful manager and will bring the power of his cabinet position to the table to the benefit of the citizens of the commonwealth.”

  • "Massachusetts has been a national leader of standardized assessment and accountability. Governor Romney’s leadership provides the state with an opportunity to take reform to the next level."
    • Dane Linn, Director of the NGA’s education Division, 07-14-2005 Press Release
