Governor Romney Proposes New Ethics Law To Strip Pensions From Those Who Violate The Public Trust. "Saying it's time to clean up the ethics in Washington, Republican presidential contender Mitt Romney today said he is proposing to strip pension benefits of any elected official or federal government employee who is convicted of a felony for violating the public trust." (Rod Boshart, "Romney: Time To Shore Up Ethics," Cedar Rapids Gazette, 8/2/07)

- Governor Mitt Romney: "One thing I'd like to add, if I'm lucky enough to be President, I will fight for a provision, for a law, which says that if you're convicted of a crime as a government employee or an appointee – you're convicted of a crime that involves violation of the public trust, you've done some kind of abuse of your position – that you get stripped of your pension. ... We're going to take away their pensions if they violate our trust." (Governor Mitt Romney, Remarks At An Ask Mitt Anything, Urbandale, IA, 8/2/07)

We're going to become sanctuary cities for illegal aliens. We're going to instruct our city workers that they're not going to be notifying the federal government of people who are here illegally' and then those same cities ask for millions, if not billions of dollars from the Federal Government. It's like wait a second, we're not going to send you all of the money that you want if you are not going to be willing to enforce and live by the laws of the government." (WRKO's "Howie Carr Show," 8/3/07)

An Agenda To Lower Taxes:

Governor Romney: "If the economy is growing quickly, then we generate all sorts of new revenue. And the best way to keep the economy rolling is to keep our taxes down. That's why I proposed middle income Americans ought to pay no taxes on their savings. Invest in the future of the economy. Growth helps us provide the revenue that we need." (ABC, Republican Presidential Candidate Debate, Des Moines, IA, 8/5/07)

American Prosperity:

To Protect American Taxpayers, Governor Mitt Romney Called On Congress To Re*Impose A Three*Fifths (60%) Supermajority Requirement To Raise Taxes. Congress should not be able to increase taxes on a political whim and with a simple majority.

  • Under The Current Law, The Death Tax Is Set To Return In 2011.

The American Family:

"Following the Columbine shootings, Peggy Noonan, you may have seen her column, wrote an article in which she described our world as 'the ocean in which our children now swim.' She described a cesspool of violence, and sex, and drugs, and indolence, and perversions. She said that the boys who did the shooting had in her words 'inhaled too deep the ocean in which they swam.' I'd like to see us clean up the water in which our kids are swimming."

America's Strength:

Unlike Senator Barack Obama (D-IL), Governor Romney Will Not Meet With Some Of The World's Worst Dictators. "Romney says Obama was wrong to say he'd meet with the leaders of Iran, Syria and North Korea. 'The president of the United States does not bestow our dignity and the power of our reputation around the world around those people,' Romney says. 'It's a remarkable difference if a Democratic president like Barack Obama were running this country.'" (O. Kay Henderson, "Romney Sides With Clinton In Foreign Policy Spat," Radio Iowa, 7/26/07)

Immigration Reform Priorities:

Governor Romney Outlines Three Priorities On Immigration Reform. GOVERNOR ROMNEY: "We're going to have to secure our border first. Two, put in place an employment verification system to make sure we're giving jobs only to those people who come legally. And number three, for the 12 million, we can't allow them to have a special privilege of being able to stay here indefinitely." MIKE GALLAGHER: "Well, I tell you that's music to my ears and to the ears of millions of Americans..." ("Mike Gallagher Show," 5/21/07)

Governor Romney: Border Security Is Number One. GOVERNOR ROMNEY: "The people I speak with as I go to Republican events agree with me that there are three key rules that we have to follow. One is, we have to secure the border. Two is, we have to have an employment verification system to know who's here legally and who's not here legally. That's only fair to the employers to know who is who. And then, finally, for those people that are here illegally today, while it may be fine for them to apply for citizenship and to apply for permanent residency, that they should do so in line with everyone else and they should be given no advantage, no special privilege by having come here illegally." (Fox News' "Your World," 5/24/07)

Governor Romney: "I believe it's important to end illegal immigration so we can maintain and encourage legal immigration. Immigration is good for this country; it's helped us over our history. We need immigration to provide some of the skills that we may miss, migrant workers, cultural advantages. It's a great source of vitality for America to have legal immigration, but illegal immigration * that we need to bring an end to." (KCMO's "Morning Show with Chris Stigall," 5/22/07)

Benchmarks In Washington:

Governor Romney: "We're also going to have to do something we talk about on in Iraq. We all talked about benchmarks. Well, how about benchmarks in Washington? Let's lay out what we're going to get done, and instead of just talking about the same old same old, let's streamline and make Washington more efficient." (Fox News Channel, Republican Presidential Candidate Debate, Columbia, SC, 5/15/07)

Governor Romney: There Is A War On Terror:

Governor Romney: "I was shocked to see just a day or two ago, John Edwards * a candidate for President of the United States * say there's not a War on Terror. ... Maybe he needs to explain that to the people in London, to the people in Madrid, to the people in Tanzania, to the people in Saudi Arabia. Explain that to the people in Indonesia, in Bali. Explain that to the people of New York City. Explain that to the people of Lebanon. Explain that to the people in Israel that there's not a War on Terror." (Governor Mitt Romney, Remarks, Jacksonville, FL, 5/24/07)

Double The Size Of Gitmo:

Governor Romney: "You said the person's going to be in Guantanamo. I'm glad they're at Guantanamo. I don't want them on our soil. I want them on Guantanamo ... Some people have said, we ought to close Guantanamo. My view is, we ought to double Guantanamo." (Fox News Channel, Republican Presidential Candidate Debate, Columbia, SC, 5/15/07)

Governor Mitt Romney On The House Democrat Tax Increase Plan

Monday, Apr 30, 2007

Boston, MA – Today, Governor Mitt Romney issued the following statement on the House Democrat plan to dramatically increase taxes on the American people:

"House Democrats have shown once again why they cannot be trusted with stewardship of our economy. Their tax plan is nothing more than a recipe for higher taxes and slower economic growth. Instead of raising taxes on hard*working Americans and giving more money to the government, we need to lower taxes. Pro*growth economic policies do not begin with government taking more money out of taxpayers' pockets."

The Democrats' Plan To Increase Taxes:

The House Democrat Alternative Minimum Tax (AMT) Plan Will Force A $650 Billion Tax Increase. "Mr. Charlie Rangel and other key Democrats on Ways and Means have come up with their plan to protect the middle class from the growing reach of the Alternative Minimum Tax (AMT). ... But the Democrats' dilemma is to figure out how to come up with the $650 billion of revenue this stealth tax would have raised over the next 10 years. The dilemma is self imposed because House Democrats adopted a 'pay as you go' budget rule a few months ago, promising that any tax cut be offset with an equally large tax increase." (Stephen Moore, Op*Ed, "$650 Billion Tax Hike," The Wall Street Journal, 4/30/07)

  • Democrats Will Increase Income Taxes. "The changes in the AMT rate, and the treatment of dividends and capital gains, still leaves Mr. Rangel at least $600 billion short of paying for the AMT fix. House Democrats have acknowledged that to close this final gap, they will have to look to personal income taxes." (Stephen Moore, Op*Ed, "$650 Billion Tax Hike," The Wall Street Journal, 4/30/07)

  • Democrats Will Increase The Top AMT Tax Rate. "What is surprising is how high rates must be raised to make their plan's numbers add up. The top AMT rate would increase to 31.5% from 28%." (Stephen Moore, Op*Ed, "$650 Billion Tax Hike," The Wall Street Journal, 4/30/07)

  • Democrats Will Raise The Capital Gains And Dividends Tax Rate. "Democratic tax experts also recommend eliminating the lower rate for capital gains and dividends for those subject to the AMT. This would raise the capital gains tax rate to about 31% from its present 15% rate." (Stephen Moore, Op*Ed, "$650 Billion Tax Hike," The Wall Street Journal, 4/30/07)

Governor Romney's Plan To Cut Taxes:

To Ensure America's Continued Economic Growth, Governor Romney Will Fight To Cut Taxes For All Americans. Lower taxes are a key to ensuring continued economic growth and job creation.

  • Governor Romney Was The First 2008 Presidential Candidate To Sign The "Taxpayer Protection Pledge" Promising To Oppose Any Effort To Increase Taxes.

  • Governor Romney Will Make The Bush Tax Cuts Permanent. Governor Romney believes making the Bush Tax Cuts permanent is the first step to ensuring that Americans are able to keep more of their hard*earned money.

  • Governor Romney Proposes Lower Tax Rates For All Americans. This approach is fair, simple and extends the pro*growth benefits of tax rate cuts to all Americans.

  • Governor Romney Will Fight To Abolish The Death Tax. It is unfair to tax the American people three times: once when they earn it; second when they invest and receive income from those investments; and third when they die.

  • Governor Romney Proposes A Savings Incentive Plan. Middle*class Americans will be able to save and earn interest, dividends and capital gains tax free. We need to end tax penalties on savings and investments for middle class families.

  • Governor Romney Believes Our Corporate Tax Rate Must Be Competitive With The Rest Of The World. The United States has one of the highest corporate tax rates in the world. We simply cannot afford for future economic growth to have a tax rate that is out of alignment with the other major economies of the world.
