Andrew R. Gottlieb comes to the position of chief of the Office for Commonwealth Development with two decades of experience in state and local government, and a proud legacy of environmental protection and innovations in government.
Governor Mitt Romney named Gottlieb as chief of the Office for Commonwealth Development, which coordinates housing, transportation, energy and the environment, in April 2006. He succeeded Douglas I. Foy, who was the first chief of the office.
Gottlieb had been in the No. 2 position at the Office for Commonwealth Development, responsible for a wide range of policy coordination, intergovernmental relations and innovative financing strategies supporting smart growth.
Before that, he was Assistant Commissioner for Policy and Planning at the state Department of Environmental Protection, the agency where he served for some 17 years before coming to the Office for Commonwealth Development. From 1986 to 1988, Gottlieb served as executive director of the Special Legislative Commission on Water Supply.
Gottlieb’s experience in local government came in the late 1980s, when he served as a member of the Mashpee Board of Selectman, from 1987 to 1991. He served as chairman for one year. Strongly committed to Cape Cod, he continues to be active in Cape Cod planning and environmental issues.
Gottlieb received an M.B.A from Boston University in 1996 and a B.A. in government from Harvard University in 1985.
“Andrew Gottlieb is a dedicated public servant whose in-depth knowledge of government and the complexities of development will allow him to be immediately effective in his new role,” Governor Romney said upon appointing Gottlieb.
