Death Penalty

Deliberative Democracy

Political decisions should be the product of fair and reasonable analysis and debate among citizens .

Debt

  1. "The Federal government must stop its borrowing and spending binge. The Debt is a burden on our economy, our currency, our foreign policy, and our future. This is beyond pork barrel spending. We must address entitlement programs – not just to save money – but to give Americans confidence in their future." - Governor Mitt Romney's PAC
  2. "When I was running for office I had a debate as you may recall, actually five of them. Don't know whether you saw the one where Tim Russert was the moderator. He wondered how we were going to be able to close a $1 billion budget gap. And I had to lay out what my plans were for doing so. When I got in office, my Secretary of Finance came to me and said, I've got great news and bad news. The great news is we don't have a one billion budget gap. The bad news is we have a $3 billion budget gap. And there were some people that said all we have to do is raise taxes. And I said, look, if you raise taxes you kill jobs and you hurt working families. There were some other people that said why don't we just raise Debt. We can just borrow our way out of this. But if you raise Debt you just put our problems on the backs of our kids. I said no, we're going to go back to government, we're going to cut out the waste and inefficiency and duplication. We're going to do the job we were elected to do. And Republicans and Democrats came together and made a lot of that happen." - Governor Mitt Romney at the NH Federation of Republican Women's Lilac Dinner

Does It Work ?>> "Pure" Capitalism! Socialism, Conservative, progressivism, etc.

We should move away from broad political identities such as liberals, progressive, conservatives, socialists, or capitalists.

Many unrelated issues are randomly grouped for no reason within these broad coalitions. We should move toward thinking of the most effective solutions for specific problems based on likely costs or benefits. Issues are too complex to fit into a conservative or liberal solution. The devil is in the details. Those who think issues are simple are the problem. What is "most likely" to work the "best." Big, small, planned and command, and market economies have failed. Critical issues are lack of corruption, the rule of law, democracy, honest debate, freedom, and transparency. However, they should be non-partisan. Gun control shouldn't be a partisan, emotional issue. We should follow the second amendment and regulate guns to provide the most benefit and minimize costs. Potential benefits include freedom, hunting, family security, and constitutional government. Costs include deaths and accidents. We should scale harm reduction activities with quantifiable numbers and objective criteria, similar to how we attempt to reduce deaths from swimming pools and cars.

We can't adopt either "philosophy" because conservative, liberal, socialistic, communist, and capitalist societies have failed their citizens.

We can't adopt a team or a side. Politics becomes a team sport (our side against the other). Separating into teams makes us stupid. Also, no grand idea is always true or false. There are dangers of too much liberalism, conservativism, too much change too fast, and good plans done poorly. All ideas fail when applied stupidly from a philosophical standpoint that ignores the evidence that it could be working better or potential unnecessary costs. Also, countries are complex, and some things might be a good idea, just at the wrong time. For instance, in a perfect society, some things might make total sense in the long run. However, our society might compete with authoritarian states. It might not be the best time to tear ourselves apart over minor issues affecting a few people.
