If people have to show their prestige by buying expensive things, they should do it with something that is practical, instead of buying a $300,000 watch.
Reasons to agree
- We need more practical advances in our society, that are dependent on the wealthy being the pioneers.
- Wealthy people should move off the utility grid.
Reasons to disagree
- Almost everything expensive that people buy can be justified by saying that it is an investment. People used to buy gold or diamonds. A watch is more practical than a lump of gold. At least you can tell time with a watch.
- Almost anything expensive can be justified because it drives down the cost for everyone else, or advances society or the state of the art. For instance, indoor plumbing, electricity, TV's, computers all used to be only affordable by the very wealthy. But because they bought them, it drove down the price for everyone else.
- Some expensive things are expensive, just because they are unique. Just like that cheese sandwich that had the mother Mary in it.
