Linkages Scores

When an argument is used to support another opinion, you need to evaluate if the 1st argument can logically support the 2nd argument. This linkage can be assessed and given a score. Its score should represent the strength you can say: if the 1st argument is valid, it would logically strengthen the 2nd argument.

I have set up sub-arguments to put reasons to agree or disagree that one argument should support another view. The linkage score could go between -100% and 100%... With no opinions for or against the linkage, you could start with a linkage score of 0, or 50%. With more reasons to agree, you would increase the score, perhaps up to 100%. Or, if there are 5 times as many reasons to agree than there are reasons to disagree, then would you have the multiplier by 500%?

If you say "As" represents the number of reasons to support the linkage and "Ds" means the number of reasons to oppose the connection, then one formula could be As/(As+Ds). This would represent the percentage of As, and scores would range between -100% and 100%.

I try to get Kialo to use linkage strength here.

Governor Mitt Romney Labor Quotes

  • “Our state workforce is hardworking and dedicated. They do a difficult job under sometimes trying circumstances,” Romney said. “But, in order to manage our workforce more effectively and efficiently, our administration needs the right management tools.”

  • “My administration’s goal is to maintain a talented and dedicated public workforce while providing the taxpayers with maximum value for their hard-earned dollars.”

  • “Bringing the best management practices to the public sector requires creating a system that puts the best managers in charge,” Romney said. “Massachusetts is fortunate to have so many talented men and women working in government and clearly distinguishing management positions from other union positions will help to ensure we maintain a top-notch public work force in the years to come.”

  • “My administration wants to restore a fair bidding process to the Commonwealth,” Romney said. “Our public sector employees are talented and they work hard. Allowing fair, merit-based competition to thrive will ultimately benefit not only the taxpayers, but our public workforce as well.”

Governor Mitt Romney "Law" Quotes

  • "As Popeye used to say, 'I am what I am,'" Romney sighed. "I'm as clear as I can be to people as to what my views are. When I ran for office I indicated I did not favor same-sex marriage or civil unions and I have simply stood by that position. At the same time, I've indicated I'm a person who will follow the law. I respect the process of the law and if the legal processes result in a conclusion I disagree with, I will nonetheless follow the law. I swore to do that when I became governor. A lot of what is passed by the legislature is not as I would pass it, but I will implement it and enforce it."

Governor Mitt Romney Liberalism Quotes

  • “I felt very strongly that the social programs of the sixties and seventies, the liberal agenda - I’ll call it the Johnson agenda-had hurt working families, had hurt the poor in many instances. And while the liberals had the best of intentions, I felt that the programs themselves had created a permanent underclass and had fostered poverty instead of eliminating it.”
    • Governor Mitt Romney, The Atlantic (September 2005)

Governor Mitt Romney Library Quotes

  • “Massachusetts has a long and proud tradition of supporting education and investing in our people. Lieutenant Governor Healey and I are committed to ensuring that our libraries continue to be state-of-the-art resources for all of our citizens.”

  • “There is no denying the power that literacy unlocks in each individual. When we invest in your libraries, we are investing in our future.”

Governor Mitt Romney and Local Issues Quotes

  • "I do not believe the best way to find solutions to our fiscal problems is to sit on Beacon Hill and simply issue directives and orders to our cities and towns. Instead, I believe we must come together to find the least painful path through this crisis."
    • Governor Mitt Romney

  • "We must have the cities and towns at the table as we craft our answer to the budgetary challenges that confront us so that the solutions we propose do not unfairly target health and human service programs."
    • Governor Mitt Romney

  • When faced with a State budget gap, he worked with the cities. He said; ""We view this moment of economic crisis as an opportunity to remove some of the financial and bureaucratic burdens the state has saddled local government with over the years,"
    • Governor Mitt Romney

  • “For those of us in elective office, we are sometimes required to put the good of the whole above the good of any individual city, town or special interest group."

  • “By sharing in the burden, our local leaders are demonstrating they support the principle of fairness and that they recognize a true partnership means sharing in good times and bad.”

  • "In addition to the company's growth and success over the last several years, Eastern Fisheries has distinguished itself through a consistent track record of community outreach and charitable giving," said Romney. "Eastern is a true hometown business, with roughly 80 percent of the company's employees living in the city of New Bedford."

  • “Many of the projects funded this year are concentrated in urban areas and they are consistent with our ‘Fix It First’ strategy of maintaining existing infrastructure over new development,” said Governor Mitt Romney. “This investment in these facilities is critical for the protection of our environment and our public health.”

  • “Over the past two years, the Commonwealth has partnered with our cities and towns to manage through some difficult times,” Romney said. “Now, times are better and the state is once again in a position to send more money back to our cities and towns.”

  • “These awards are a substantial investment in existing facilities and systems which are a critical component for the protection of the environment and the public health,” said Governor Mitt Romney. “The funded projects prevent water pollution and help rehabilitate current infrastructure so that communities may plan for the future.”

  • “Permitting can take up to five years to complete, making it extremely difficult for businesses here to expand and add jobs,” said Romney. “If we’re serious about encouraging business investment and expansion, we have to take a chainsaw to the red tape that ties up the process for years and years.”

  • “We owe a debt of thanks to our cities and towns that shared in the sacrifice as we succeeded in getting the state back on its feet again. It's been a long road back, but we are once more in a position to share our growth revenues with local communities.”
