Question: How can a Republican, even a brilliant one like Mitt Romney, be elected to the governorship of one of the most liberal states in the union, Massachusetts? This is a question that many conservatives ask themselves. After all, Massachusetts is the land of Ted Kennedy, John Kerry, Harvard University, and every manner of “ism” from old Soviet Union-style communism to modern liberalism.
Answer: I believe that the reason has to do with money, specifically taxes. Massachusetts has sky-high taxes because the liberals want to provide for everyone’s needs. They are pure-hearted individuals who want to do what is best for society. Therefore, all manner of social welfare program exists in Massachusetts; many are a model for such programs across the country. But, as we all know, wanting to do good is not the same as “affording” to do good. Liberals cannot be expected to repudiate their notion that government must be expanded and taxes must be raised in order to properly meet the needs of the the underserved. They KNOW they cannot keep handing over a bigger percentage of their paychecks every year to support these people, so on election day, they don their Democratic candidate pins then surreptitiously vote Republican. It’s brilliant, but perhaps a tad disingenuous.
