Mr. Bright Guy

Yes, I made a fan music video. However, this one is different, as there are no other music videos on Youtube of this song about this subject. So, thank you for your indulgence.

This is a music video of a song by Eric D. Snider (www.ericdsnider.com) about Ken Jennings (www.ken-jennings.com). Ken Jennings, of course, was noted for his 74-game winning streak on American TV's Jeopardy! in 2004. Eric is an online movie critic, humor columnist, and musical wit--kind of a Roger Ebert, Dave Barry, and "Weird Al" Yankovic all rolled into one. Both are members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormons, LDS), were born in 1974, attended the same university (BYU) that I did, are very intelligent, watch a lot of movies, and have good senses of humor. They also write the only two blogs that I currently read regularly.

Here's an entertaining column wherein Eric describes meeting Ken in late 2006:

Ken's blog entry describing the same event is here:

The song is a parody of "Mr. Brightside" by The Killers. About the middle of the song, Stephen Colbert and David Letterman make brief cameos. Neil Armstrong (possibly Buzz Aldrin), Tom Cruise, Mitt Romney, Rodin's "The Thinker" and Michelangelo's "David" (no nudity, though) also get featured. (Did I just name drop to get additional hits to this video? Yes I did. Why do you think this description is so long?)

Fellow Jeopardy! and Who Wants to Be A Millionaire champs Brad Rutter, Kevin Olmstead and Nancy Christy also get featured, as well as Bob Boden, a game show enthusiast. Also, Nancy Zerg, who beat Ken Jennings. And a nerd superman.

The rest (like Oprah Winfrey) get named in the lyrics.

By the way, that's Eric at the beginning of the song playing a song which is not the one you're hearing. If you're interested, you can hear that song, "Safety First," a parody of "Choose the Right" here:

That's also him singing "The Scully Song," about Agent Dana Scully of "The X-Files," in this video:

"Mr Bright Guy" was available for purchase on Eric's CD "Monkeys and Pirates are Funny," but that CD sold out recently, unfortunately.

The good news is that Eric has generously enabled the public to listen to that and several more of his songs here:

Here are the lyrics of the song:

Coming out of Salt Lake

and I was doing real nice

I could always ring first

with my signaling device.

I had questions for all

of the answers they gave.

It was not a tight game

It was not a close shave.

I was up by a lot

When we got to the end

Alex told me I'd won

That the winner was Ken.

For the next several weeks

I would win every time

My opponents were geeks

But they were facing Ken Jennings

I could not stop winning

I'm too smart!

I'll be a star

A nerd icon

A game show King Kong

Jeopardy!

Makes a rich Saint out of me

My Church will say "Oh my heck!"

When they see my tithing check.

I'm a Mormon millionaire!

Maybe faced with dorky hair

You can't beat me, don't even try,

'Cause I'm Mr. Bright Guy.

After seventy-four games

I was on quite a streak

People tuned in to watch

like I was some kind of freak

Household name I became

"Hey, it's squeaky-clean slouch"

Oh, without posing nude,

or jumping on Oprah's couch.

But on show 75

I began to have trouble

'Cause I kept screwing up

When I hit Daily Doubles.

By the end of the game,

I was up but not much

And then Final Jeopardy! came

And I disappointed Alex

When I wrote "What is Fed Ex?"

I was wrong!

My reign was done

I left in shock

It was H&R Block.

Jeopardy!

I was making history

A Mormon who is notable

For knowing potent potables.

But all good things have to end

Trebek says we can still be friends

My fifteen minutes have gone by

But I'm Mr. Bright Guy.

Additional Credits:

Thanks to jdkresz, darijoe, foundonfloor, and kraut63, for uploading clips of and about Jeopardy that were used in the video, as well as knobodi for the clip of the earth exploding. The painting that appears during the lyrics "I was making" is "Blacksmith Shop Scene" by Herman Geisen, circa 1950. Various other images were found at various places on the internet (including several from ken-jennings.com). I altered some of them, and I believe their use here is allowed under free use.

Hope you enjoy it.
