Romney won the first Debate.

Reasons to agree

  1. Rudy Guiliani flailed badly on abortion.
  2. He seemed completely at ease on the stage despite a horrible format with some awful questions ("What do you dislike about America?" "Should Bill Clinton be back in the White House?") and several no-hopers mixing it up.
  3. Romney was fluent, showed flashes of humor, and had clearly prepped well without over-prepping at the cost of spontaneity.
  4. The game plan was don't screw up and to introduce himself to the American people
  5. Mccain did not win the first debate.
  6. Giuliani did not win the first debate.
  7. Romney struck the right note with Bush.
  8. Romney did a good job with the Roman Catholic bishops question.
  9. But it was telling that in the Spin Room most of the Giuliani people departed fairly swiftly, followed by the McCainiacs and then the lesser candidates (who did their own spinning). At the end, it was Team Romney that remained, savouring every last moment.
  10. "The former governor of Massachusetts found himself in Simi Valley, Calif., on a stage full of guys with ill-fitting suits, bad hair, fractured syntax and tired eyes." - Howie Carr
  11. "Mitt was a venture capitalist. He took over failing corporations and turned them around by laying off extraneous layers of unneeded people. He had to be thinking last night how many of these governmental middle-management types around him need a pink slip from the race, pronto." - Howie Carr
  12. "...he brushed aside the moonbat questions of Chris Matthews as if they were gnats." - Howie Carr
  13. Romney was asked the worst questions.
  14. “I was in Vietnam, too” Hagel
  15. Romney put to rest the debate about whether he was ashamed of his health care plan.
  16. Romney did not try to pander to cultural conservatives.
  17. Asked if he wanted to see Bill Clinton back living in the White House, he said: “The only thing I can think of that’d be as bad as that would be to have the Gang of Three running the war on terror: Pelosi, Reid and Hillary Clinton.”
  18. How will you be different, in any way, from President George W. Bush?” “I think we're each our own person; we have our own values,” Romney said. “I respect the president's character, his passion, his love for this country. I believe everything he does in this war against terror flows from a desire to protect the American people and to make our future secure.”
  19. "The statuesque Mr. Romney had a certain good-natured command, a presidential voice, and a surprising wiliness. He seemed happy to be there, and in the mysterious way that some people seem to dominate, he dominated." - PEGGY NOONAN
  20. "He actually answered the questions asked of him -- even the stupid ones". Captains Quarters
  21. McCain supported federal funding for embryonic stem-cell research, one of only two to do so, and pretty much wrote off the conservative base when he did so.
  22. Giuliani stumbled pretty badly on abortion.
