Romney Says Media Must 'Police Itself'

"Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney made a quick fundraising stop Wednesday in Oklahoma, taking time to criticize news coverage of a secret U.S. plan in Iran and to challenge an immigration plan backed by one of his main GOP rivals."

"Romney, 60, spoke briefly with reporters after the closed fundraiser, lashing out at ABC News for airing details of a secret CIA nonlethal destabilization plan in Iran.

 

"He questioned the decision 'to publish information about a covert action's existence and publish that not only to America, but to the entire world.'

 

"The reporting has the potential to 'jeopardize our national security,' Romney said.

 

"Romney called for media executives to come up with 'voluntary rules' on reporting items of national security."

"On illegal immigration, Romney said a visa plan that would allow illegal immigrants to gain U.S. citizenship under certain conditions should be tossed out. It is part of a U.S. Senate immigration proposal that is co-sponsored by presidential contender U.S. Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz.

 

"'For those that are already here illegally, the 12 million, let them apply at some point for permanent residency or citizenship, but give them no advantage, give them no special pathway,' Romney said. 'Let them apply like everybody else in the world.'" ...
