"The occasion was the 122nd annual white-tie dinner of the Gridiron Club, Washington's oldest press group."

"Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, seeking the GOP presidential nomination, spoke for the Republicans.

"U.S. Rep. Rahm Emanuel, D-Ill., chairman of the House Democratic Caucus, responded for the Democrats."

"Romney stole the show.

"He appeared at the dinner with a country guitar and banjo trio, singing, 'I've got all the friends in low places.'

"He also cracked a few jokes about his Mormon faith.

"'It's hard being a conservative in Massachusetts,' he noted. 'It's a lot like being a Mormon in a room full of alcoholics - like here.'

"Another: 'A lot of people think Mormons are square.' But Romney said he had been out for a good time recently with U.S. Sen. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah.

"'Nobody has heard about it,' Romney deadpanned. 'What happens in Disneyland stays in Disneyland.'

"Romney added, 'It's very different in Rahm Emanuel's hometown, Chicago, where four out of two people vote Democratic.'

"Romney prepared a video presentation about many of the leading candidates for president in both parties.

"First came Hillary Clinton, speaking with an affected Southern accent in Alabama. 'Clearly, she's just not willing to do whatever it takes to win,' Romney quipped." ...
