ABC's Terry Moran On The Trail With Governor Mitt Romney:

ABC's TERRY MORAN: "One of the contenders you might not have heard much about yet. The competition for the Republican nomination's wide open, so pay attention to the man from Massachusetts, Mitt Romney, and the big question about him. How much will his faith be a factor? I spent the day with him in Iowa as part of our series, 'The Contenders.'"

GOVERNOR MITT ROMNEY: "Wow. Look at the size of this group. Oh, my."

MORAN: "Mitt Romney, a Republican candidate for president, sure is nice."

...

MORAN: "He's personable, polite, cheerful, nice all the time, it seems."

...

MORAN: "Do you find people know you out here?"

GOVERNOR ROMNEY: "They don't yet. But that's exactly what I mean. That's an itch. I mean, you know, we got a year to go. So it's just a lot of trips, get to know people, learn who they are on a personal basis. They get to know you."

...

MORAN: "But a lot of people think Mitt Romney is going to be a formidable candidate. He's got the money, the skills, the looks, and the track record that might appeal to a lot of Republicans."

...

MORAN: "Romney is definitely smooth, polished, a political pro."

GOVERNOR ROMNEY: "When you face challenges, you go to your core beliefs. And I happen to believe something about America's source of strength."

MORAN: "He's already assembled a top-flight campaign team. They managed to pack every event when we were with him. And he's done his homework on the issues. Here he is at a massive ethanol plant in rural Iowa."

GOVERNOR ROMNEY: "As a nation, we need to support the development of new technologies and the adoption of new technologies so that we can free ourselves from the non-market OPEC stranglehold on energy in this country."

...

MORAN: "As he ends this campaign day with a lot more ahead of him, Mitt Romney seems full of hope. Hope that Republicans and Americans, in general, are ready for a new face, a pretty handsome one at that, and a new voice, a voice that just happens to belong to a Mormon."

Governor Mitt Romney On His Faith:

MORAN: "But there's something else about Mitt Romney, something that makes him different from every other candidate. He's a Mormon. Would you describe yourself as a devout Mormon? True believer?"

GOVERNOR ROMNEY: "Absolutely. I'm proud of my faith. It's part of my heritage. I think the American people respect individuals of faith. That's the kind of person they wanna lead the country."

Governor Mitt Romney On His pro-life Record:

MORAN: "What's your position on abortion?"

GOVERNOR ROMNEY: "I'm pro-life."

...

MORAN: "Your critics say you're flip-flopping rather conveniently when you're running for president."

GOVERNOR ROMNEY: "Well, you know, we all learn from experience. And I'm just like other people in this nation. Not everything I believed 12 or 13 years ago is the same today, with regards to the issue of abortion. And so about two years ago, I said I am pro-life. And prior to that time, I had a different position."

Governor Mitt Romney On Iraq:

MORAN: "Was it the right thing for the United States to invade Iraq?"

GOVERNOR ROMNEY: "Well, I supported the President at the time. He indicated that based on intelligence, we had weapons of mass destruction, a threat to this land. He proposed a solution and I supported it. And I'm not going back in trying to second-guess that. I don't have the data or inside sources to suggest doing that."

...

GOVERNOR ROMNEY: "There's no question about the fact that we have not conducted the war as effectively as we might ... and it's been problematic and has caused part of the problems we face today."

In Case You Missed It: Governor Mitt Romney at the National Review's Conservative Summit

Sunday, Jan 28, 2007

Washington, D.C.

January 27, 2007

Governor Romney On The Need For Fiscal Responsibility In Washington:

"As we look to the nation, you know that we face some extraordinary and in some respects, and in most respects, unprecedented challenges. Let's talk about some of them that affect us right here.

"One, spending in Washington is simply out of control. It's not just pork-barrel spending and earmarks, it is particularly entitlements. And you know the figures on this. Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security and interest expense are going to grow by the end of the next President's second term to well over two-thirds of federal spending. How can we remain the world's economic superpower and military superpower with that kind of entitlement expense trajectory?"

Governor Romney On Making Tax Cuts Permanent:

"When we face tough times in this country, and the economy is challenged like it was following 9/11, liberals turn and say as they always do, 'How do we make government bigger, how do we make sure that we have all the money we need to have the government programs work in tough times like this?' So they want to raise taxes.

"And Republicans say, and conservatives say, 'How do we make sure that we get taxes down in these tough times.'

"And thank heavens our President stood up. And I guess the number of naysayers, the Democratic naysayers and even some in our own party. And he said, 'You know what, I trust Main Street more than I trust K Street.' We're going to put money in the hands of our citizens, and that's going to get the economy going, and it did.

"By the way, I saw Grover Norquist here, I'm proud to be, I think I'm the first person who's thinking about an '08 race, who's signed his 'Taxpayer Protection Pledge' not to raise taxes, and that's easy. I've been living that. By the way, we do need to make those Bush tax cuts permanent."

Excerpts from Governor Mitt Romney's Remarks at the Seventh Annual Herzliya Conference

Tuesday, Jan 23, 2007

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

CONTACT: Kevin Madden (857) 288-6390

Herzliya, Israel - Today, Governor Mitt Romney will make remarks at the Seventh Annual Herzliya Conference on the nature of threat posed by Iran and the actions necessary to address this threat.

To see Governor Romney's speech live beginning at 8:20 a.m. EST, please click here: http://web11.mediazone.co.il/media/idc/LIVE/20070121/?logo=6&lang=eng

Governor Romney's Five Step Plan Of Action To Prevent A nuclear Iran:

" First, we must continue tighten economic sanctions. Our model should be at least as severe to the sanctions imposed on Apartheid South Africa. We should demand no less from the international community today ...

"We must also be imaginative in the way we pressure Iran economically - an issue I have been looking into. In my meetings this week in Israel, I have become aware of the potential of U.S. pension funds to further isolate the Iranian economy. We should explore a selective disinvestment policy. After a series of briefings here, I have contacted the Treasurer of my own state of Massachusetts and Governors of other states to begin this process by meeting today with senior Israeli leaders in Boston.

" Second, we must impose diplomatic isolation of Iran's Government. Ahmadinejad should not be provided the trappings, respect, and recognition of a responsible head of state as he travels. In fact, when former Iranian President Khatami traveled to Boston last year to lecture at Harvard University, I denied him state police security for his visit. The real question is: why was he invited in the first place? Ahmadinejad is even more strident than Khatami. He should neither be invited to foreign capitals nor feted by foreign leaders. This would have important symbolic significance, not just to Ahmadinejad, but to the people of Iran.

"Diplomatic isolation should also include an indictment of Ahmadinejad for incitement to genocide under the genocide Convention. The United States should lead this effort.

"The full title of the genocide Convention is the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of genocide. Remember that word: Prevention.

"Article III of that treaty establishes that 'public incitement to commit genocide' is a punishable Crime. Every signatory to this treaty, including the U.S. and most European countries, shares an obligation to enforce it. So do human rightsgroups that care about international humanitarian law.

"Nobel Prize Winner Elie Wiesel, and human rightsadvocate and former Canadian Justice Minister Irwin Cotler have spoken out on this issue.

"In addition, former U.S. Ambassador John Bolton has been a forceful advocate for this effort, and is joined by Alan Dershowitz. If these two can agree, they must be on to something.

" Third, Arab states must join this effort to prevent a nuclear Iran. These states can do much more than wring their hands and urge America to act. They should support Iraq's nascent government, They can help America focus on Iran by quickly turning down the temperature of the Arab-Israeli conflict - stopping the financial and weapons flows to Hamas and Hizbullah ... thawing relations with Israel ... and telling the Palestinians they must drop terrorism and recognize Israel's right to exist.

" Fourth, we must make it clear that while nuclearization may be a source of pride, it can also be a source of peril. The military option remains on the table. And further, nuclear material that falls into the hands of terrorists would surely provoke a devastating response from the civilized world.

" Fifth, our strategy should be integrated into a broader approach to the broader Muslim world. I agree with our friend, former Prime Minister Aznar of Spain, that a central purpose of NATO should be to defeat radical Islam. I believe this has two critical dimensions. The first is an unquestionably capable military. This will mean a greater investment by the United States as well as other nations. The second is a global partnership which includes NATO and other allies. Its mission would be to support progressive Muslim communities and leaders in every nation where radical Islam is battling modernity and moderation. This Partnership for Prosperity should help provide the tools and funding necessary for moderates to win the debate in their own societies. They need secular public schools, micro credit and banking, the rule of law, adequate healthcare, human rights, and competitive economic policies. In the final analysis, only Muslims will be able to permanently defeat radical Islam. And we can help."

Other Key Excerpts Of Governor Romney's Remarks As Prepared For Delivery:

"And on Iraq, I would just like to make another point. Some Congressional leaders in the United States today are arguing that the President is not authorized to allow our forces to pursue Iranian elements inside Iraq - which are attacking our own troops. That would be folly."

Governor Mitt Romney on the President's State of the Union Address

Tuesday, Jan 23, 2007

Boston, MA - Governor Mitt Romney released the following statement regarding the President's State of the Union Address:

"We are blessed to live in a country with the best medical system in the world. However, for too many, private health insurance is often out of reach. I welcome President Bush's proposed initiatives to make health insurance more available and affordable. He recognizes the answer is not more government but more innovation, harnessing the power of free market reforms.

"I am especially encouraged by the President's initiative to help states find new solutions for individuals to buy health insurance. I believe the states are our best laboratories to find the best policy innovations to our health insurance crisis. As Governor, my state found a way to get all of our citizens covered without a tax increase and without a big government takeover."

Governor Mitt Romney Offers Emphatic Support for DeMint Amendment on Spending Reform

Friday, Jan 12, 2007

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

CONTACT: Kevin Madden (857) 288-6400

Orlando, FL – Today, Governor Mitt Romney released the following statement strongly supporting U.S. Senator Jim DeMint's (R-SC) efforts to stop wasteful spending of the [taxpayers]' money in Washington. Senator DeMint's amendment will help reform the spending process in a way that brings more transparency and accountability.

"Senator DeMint has shown both courage and conviction for standing by his reform principles and resisting those on Capitol Hill who want to preserve the status quo on wasteful spending. Senator Harry Reid and Capitol Hill Democrats need to recognize that Washington can't continue to pile earmarks onto spending bill after spending bill. Instead, they should embrace Senator DeMint's amendment and stand up for taxpayers and fiscal responsibility."

Background Information On Senator DeMint's Reform Amendment

Sen. Jim DeMint (R-SC) Garnered Bipartisan Support To Pass Earmark Reform. "Nine Democrats joined with Republicans in support of stricter House-passed rules on lawmakers' pet projects, known as 'earmarks' - demonstrating the fragility of the Democratic Party's thin Senate majority. ... The measure, an amendment to an ethics and lobbying bill, would have adopted a wider definition of 'earmarks' - specific projects inserted in bills – to include Corps of Engineer water projects, Pentagon weapon systems and items from other federal entities. ... 'If we're going to go through all this process, if we're going to change the laws and try to tell the American people that now you can see what we're doing, let's don't try to pull the wool over their eyes,' said Sen. Jim DeMint, R-S.C., sponsor of the amendment." ("9 US Senate Democrats Split With Reid Over 'Earmark' Rules," The Associated Press, 1/11/07)

Research Briefing: Meet The Real Brian Camenker

Friday, Jan 12, 2007

Today, The Associated Press Profiled Brian Camenker And His Attacks On Governor Romney:

Brian Camenker Is A "Conservative Gadfly" Who Has Focused On Attacking Governor Romney And His Strong Record On Conservative Issues. "Republican presidential hopeful Mitt Romney's political record is relatively brief – four years as Massachusetts governor and a failed campaign for the U.S. Senate. That's enough, however, for Brian Camenker, a conservative gadfly and longtime thorn in Romney's side, to write a 28-page report that portrays Romney as sympathetic to gay rights and sexual behavior that clashes with his burnished image as a defender of traditional values." (Steve LeBlanc, "Romney's Record On Gay Rights, Social Issues In Cross-Hairs," The Associated Press, 1/12/07)

-Brian Camenker Is The President Of MassResistance. (Ryan Lizza, "Urine Trouble," The New Republic, 12/25/06)

Camenker Is Not A Credible Voice And Pushes An Extreme Ideology:

Reasons to agree:

  1. The Boston Globe Noted That Camenker Is "Often Lampooned By The Local And National Media." (Matt Viser, "Interviews No Laughing Matter For Local Notables," The Boston Globe, 11/10/05)
  2. During An Interview On Comedy Central's "The Daily Show," Camenker Was Mocked For His Extreme Ideological Views. (Matt Viser, "Interviews No Laughing Matter For Local Notables," The Boston Globe, 11/10/05)

Camenker Admits He Used To Be "A Social Liberal." "For much of my Life I thought of myself as a social liberal. I voted for John Anderson for president and Michael Dukakis for governor." (Brian Camenker, "How A Good Jewish Boy Joined The 'Religious Right'," The Jewish Advocate, 12/25/96)

Camenker Has A Record Of Attacking Prominent Republicans:

In 2001, Camenker Attempted To Derail President Bush's Nomination Of Massachusetts Governor Paul Cellucci To Be Ambassador To Canada. "Brian Camenker, president of the Waltham-based Parents' Rights Coalition, privately met in Washington Thursday with about a dozen Republican staff members on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, which would evaluate [Gov. Paul] Cellucci's nomination. Camenker said they were 'shocked' to hear about homosexual teachings in Massachusetts but nervous about how President Bush would receive criticism about Cellucci, who is not only his choice for ambassador but a longtime family friend." (Tina Cassidy, "Cellucci Foe Takes Case To US Senate," The Boston Globe, 3/3/01)

- The Boston Herald Praised The Cellucci Nomination And Called On Camenker To Stop His Attacks. "And surely between now and Cellucci's confirmation hearings someone will tell the increasingly shrill Brian Camenker of the Parents Rights Coalition to simply go to his room. ? But you can't reason with zealots and Camenker is a zealot. Cellucci is a good choice for the post." (Editorial, "Bush Chooses Well For Ottawa Embassy," Boston Herald, 2/14/01)

An Early Massachusetts Primary: The Campaign For Mr. Right

By: Kathryn Jean Lopez

National Review Online

Wednesday, Jan 10, 2007

...

Dwight Duncan, one of the Brownback endorsers, told NRO last week that the contention that Romney is to blame for the state of marriage in Massachusetts is really "over the top." According to Duncan, a professor at the Southern New England School of Law, "On the whole, Romney has been consistent in defending marriage as traditionally understood. Furthermore, his use of the bully pulpit and the courts has been unquestionably instrumental in getting the legislature to finally fulfill its constitutional duty and vote on the citizen-initiated constitutional amendment regarding marriage. ..."

Kris Mineau, president of the Massachusetts family Institute, agrees: "When people ask how we can support such a switch, I ask if they ever question Teddy Kennedy's or John Kerry's switches from pro-life to pro-choice."

Mineau is among those Massachusetts social conservatives who are grateful to have had Romney in the stateHouse..." According to Mineau, "For the four years of his administration, Governor Romney provided strong leadership on key conservative social issues - whether it was politically expedient to do so or not." He tells National Review Online, "I believe Mitt Romney has done an excellent job in defending traditional family values in Massachusetts despite an extremely hostile legislature and judiciary, not to mention an attorney general and secretary of state who both opposed everything the governor stood for."

It's a view echoed by Marie Sturgis, executive director of Massachusetts Citizens for Life, who says, "Having Governor Romney in the corner office for the last four years has been one of the strongest assets the pro-life movement has had in Massachusetts. His actions concerning Life issues have been consistent and he has been helpful down the line for us in the Bay State."

Mineau adds, "From the onset of the infamous Goodridge court decision in 2003, Governor Romney has opposed same-sex marriage and, I believe, correctly sought to overturn it through a constitutional amendment. ..."

Mineau directly credits Romney with getting the state legislature to vote on a constitutional amendment on gay marriage earlier this month. He explains, "The court unanimously ruled on December 27 that the legislature was constitutionally obligated to vote. This ruling, coupled with the governor threatening to not sign the end-of-year legislative pay raise, resulted in the legislature passing the amendment on January 2nd, the last day of the session. This could never have happened without Governor Romney's leadership."

Mineau is among the signatories of a letter expected to be released on Thursday by a coalition of "organizations dedicated to fighting for the pro-family agenda in Massachusetts." ... Among those signing the letter are Harvard University law professor Mary Ann Glendon (who also serves as the president of the Pontifical Academy of Social Sciences in Rome).

An accompanying brief by constitutional lawyer David French, a founder of the group Evangelicals for Mitt (French also writes for NRO's "Phi Beta Cons" blog), is a longer defense of the governor's social-conservative cred. In the beginning of a six-page document French asserts: "In the midst of Governor Romney's efforts to rescue his state from a fiscal crisis and create lasting and innovative health care solutions, activist judges and a far-left legislature forced issues of same-sex 'marriage,' abortion, religious liberty, stem cell research, and gay rights into the forefront. Each time he was challenged, the Governor not only made the conservative choice, but also did so with an optimistic, unifying message. In doing so, he became a national leader on these vital cultural issues without squandering his ability to govern the Commonwealth." ...

Join the Club: Mitt Romney and pro-life Conversion

By: Kate O'Beirne

National Review

Monday, Jan 29, 2007

"For decades, pro-life activists have been in the business of winning hearts and minds to their cause. Powerful arguments about the humanity of the unborn have moved public opinion, and a pro-life political force has made ambitious politicians feel the heat, whether or not they see the light. Pro-lifers' faith in the power of persuasion has been rewarded, and their political clout increased, by important converts, including Presidents Ronald Reagan and George W. Bush. Mitt Romney has also changed his position on abortion, but some social conservatives argue that membership in their ranks should be closed to this most recent convert with presidential ambitions.

"In 1967, Gov. Ronald Reagan signed a liberal abortion law, declaring, 'I'm fully sympathetic with attempts to liberalize the outdated abortion law now on the books in California.' Reagan later changed his mind and expressed regret for signing a measure that saw more abortions performed in California than in any other state before Roe v. Wade. He became a committed pro-life politician and backed the first pro-life plank in the Republican platform. George W. Bush ran as a pro-choice politician in his 1978 Congressional campaign, but held pro-life views when he ran for the governorship of Texas in 1994. His father too once favored abortion rights, but took a pro-life position in the 1980 presidential campaign.

"When Sam Brownback was running in a GOP Congressional primary in 1994, he initially rebuffed a pro-life group?s endorsement, according to a recent account in The New Republic. In that article, a former president of Kansans for Life recalls that Brownback was 'unfamiliar with the anti-abortion lexicon' 20 years after Roe v. Wade, and that Brownback described himself as 'more in line with the view of Nancy Kassebaum,' the state's pro-choice junior GOP senator.

...

"During his gubernatorial campaign, [Mitt Romney] won the endorsement of the abortion-rights group Republican Majority for Choice. But three years later, the group's co-chairman declared, 'We feel very betrayed.' The reason was that Governor Romney had vetoed a bill that would have allowed access to emergency contraception – the 'morning-after pill' – without a prescription. Romney had also vetoed an embryonic-stem-cell-research bill; and last year his administration issued regulations banning the creation of embryos for research purposes, calling such research 'Orwellian in its scope.'

"In an opinion article that appeared in the Boston Globe, Romney defended his veto of the emergency-contraception bill. He explained, 'The bill does not involve only the prevention of conception: The drug it authorizes would also terminate Life after conception.' He faulted the bill for not requiring parental consent before allowing minors access to the pill. And he wrote, 'I understand that my views on laws governing abortion set me in the minority in our Commonwealth. I am pro-life. I believe that abortion is the wrong choice except in cases of incest, rape, and to save the Life of the mother.'

...

"Romney has been stating his abortion position with the conviction of a convert, in terms that can appeal to a broad audience. Many social conservatives are persuaded that his conversion is genuine."

In Case You Missed It: "Intelligent Response"

Thursday, Jan 11, 2007

Governor Mitt Romney's "Immediate Response" To Video Clips Of 1994 U.S. Senate Debate With Senator Ted Kennedy (D-MA):

The Associated Press: Mysterious Attack Video Posted On YouTube "Prompted An Immediate Response From Romney." "A 1994 videotape mysteriously posted on YouTube.com prompted Republican Mitt Romney to declare Wednesday, 'I was wrong on some issues back then,' while also insisting to social conservatives key to his presidential campaign that he is one of them. ... All of the material has been previously published, but its presentation in video form – and on the easily shared YouTube medium – prompted an immediate response from Romney, who formed a presidential exploratory committee last week." (Glen Johnson, "Republican White House Hopeful Says He Was 'Wrong' For Moderate Stands In 1994 Senate Race," The Associated Press, 1/11/07)

The Boston Globe: Last Night, Romney For President Exploratory Committee Posts Video Of Governor Romney Responding To Questions About 1994 Kennedy Debate. "Last night, Romney called in to the conservative Internet broadcast 'The Glenn and Helen Show' to react to the distribution of what his presidential exploratory committee called 'ancient footage.' ... A video of Romney calling into the 'Glenn and Helen Show' was posted on Romney's exploratory committee website last night." (Rich Klein, "Old Romney Debate Clip Is Now A Hit On The Web," The Boston Globe, 1/11/07)

Romney Press Secretary Kevin Madden: "We used the very same mediums made available to those seeking to attack Governor Romney to set the record straight in his own words with the facts." (Glen Johnson, "Republican White House Hopeful Says He Was 'Wrong' For Moderate Stands In 1994 Senate Race," The Associated Press, 1/11/07)

"Smarter Than The Average Bear":

Hugh Hewitt: "Happening In Rapid Response Fashion," Governor Romney's Innovative Push-Back Knocked The Story Down In One News Cycle. "Romney's push-back at the YouTubing of his '94 debate with Ted Kennedy – happening in rapid response fashion – means an entire news cycle on a somewhat significant story has played out before even one newspaper reported it, with the anti-Romney forces (clearly worried about the big $ Monday and the DeMint Tuesday) trying to put a stick in the spokes, and Romney's team finding a way to knock it down in the same cycle. That's a preview of what it will be like all year." (Hugh Hewitt's Blog, "The Instapundit And Instawife Interview Romney," http://hughhewitt.townhall.com, 1/10/07)

Dean Barnett: "This Is Not Only Rapid Response, But Intelligent Response." "To offer his counterpoints in the blogosphere where this is a matter of conversation, Romney did a podcast this afternoon with Professor Reynolds and his better half. But wait – there's more. While Romney was on the phone with the Reynoldses, his campaign filmed him. A short while ago, the Romney campaign posted the video of him addressing the 13 year old clip on YouTube. This is not only rapid response, but intelligent response." (Dean Barnett, Hugh Hewitt's Blog, "Smarter Than The Average Bear, Pt. II," http://hughhewitt.townhall.com, 1/10/07)

Barnett: "You'll be saying it too by the end of the campaign – Romney is Smarter Than The Average Bear." (Dean Barnett, Hugh Hewitt's Blog, "Smarter Than The Average Bear, Pt. II," http://hughhewitt.townhall.com, 1/10/07)

Governor Mitt Romney on his 1994 Debate with Senator Ted Kennedy

Thursday, Jan 11, 2007

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

CONTACT: Kevin Madden (857) 288-6400

Boston, MA – Tonight, Governor Mitt Romney appeared on the "The Glenn and Helen Show" and responded to video clips that have resurfaced from his 1994 U.S. Senate debate against Sen. Ted Kennedy (D-MA). Because Governor Romney has made strides with conservatives based on his strong record as governor, opponents have focused attacks on ancient footage from 13 years ago. Governor Romney's call into the show and comments on the 1994 debate can be viewed in a new posting at Mitt TV:

"Well, I just got a look at the excerpts from my debate against Ted Kennedy in 1994. It reminded me of why I ran against him in the first place. Someone had to give him a run for his money.

"Now, it also shows what 13 years will do. I'm grayer. I'm a little heavier. And I hope I've grown a bit wiser as well.

"Of course, I was wrong on some issues back then. I'm not embarrassed to admit that. I think most of us learn with experience. I know I certainly have.

"If you want to know where I stand by the way, you don't just have to listen to my words, you can go to look at my record as governor. Frankly, in the bluest of states. Facing the most liberal media in the country. I've led the fight to preserve traditional marriage. I've taken every legal step I could conceive of, to prevent same sex marriage.

"I have also taken action to protect the sanctity of life. I vetoed bills that authorized embryo farming, therapeutic cloning, Plan B emergency contraception, and of course a redefinition of when Life was going to begin as well.

"I've also fought for family. I've promoted abstinence education in the schools.

"I fought for English immersion in our schools and school choice. And of course as you'd expect from a Republican, I've held the line on taxes and I've worked to re-instate the death penalty.

"And I'm proud that at the same time, I've fought discrimination. I believe every American deserves equal opportunity.

"Now, that's my record. And maybe that's why people on the other side are dredging up 13 year old history and attacking me now."

Governor Mitt Romney on Iraq

Wednesday, Jan 10, 2007

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

CONTACT: Kevin Madden (857) 288-6400

Boston, MA – Governor Mitt Romney, in direct consideration of the proposed increase in troop deployments in Iraq, issued the following statement today putting an emphasis on the need for clear and measurable strategic objectives.

"I agree with the President: Our strategy in [Iraq] must change. Our military mission, for the first time, must include securing the civilian population from violence and terror. It is impossible to defeat the insurgency without first providing security for the Iraqi people. Civilian security is the precondition for any political and economic reconstruction.

"In consultation with Generals, military experts and troops who have served on the ground in Iraq, I believe securing Iraqi civilians requires additional troops. I support adding five brigades in Baghdad and two regiments in Al-Anbar province. Success will require rapid deployment.

"This effort should be combined with clear objectives and milestones for U.S. and Iraqi leaders.

"The road ahead will be difficult but success is still possible in Iraq. I believe it is in America's national [security] interest to achieve it."

Governor Mitt Romney Addresses Awakening 2007

Saturday, Jan 06, 2007

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

CONTACT: Kevin Madden (857) 288-6400

Sea Island, GA – Governor Mitt Romney today addressed Awakening 2007 – a leading conservative gathering created 12 years ago to stimulate dialogue about the important issues confronting the United States. Governor Romney was invited and introduced by Dr. Robert E. Moffit of the Heritage Foundation who is a member of Awakening's Board of Directors.

Governor Romney discussed his record of strong conservative leadership in Massachusetts and his vision for leading our country into the future.

Key Excerpts Of Governor Romney's Remarks As Prepared For Delivery:

"Now, I wasn't always a Ronald Reagan conservative. Neither was Ronald Reagan, by the way. And perhaps some in this room have had the opportunity to listen, learn, and benefit from life's experience – and to grow in wisdom, as I have. My Life experience convinced me that Ronald Reagan was right. I'm a conservative that gets the job done. And you don't just have to take my word for it, you can just look at my record."

...

"At this decisive moment in our nation's journey into a new global frontier, there are two competing visions about how America must meet a new generation of challenges. We must choose between calling on stronger government – the liberal vision – or calling on the strength of the American people – and that is my vision.

"I believe we must call on our economic muscle, our innovative minds, and the fiber of our families. I believe our country wants our vision to prevail, because when America faces challenge, Americans don't look to Washington, they look inside themselves ... and time and time again, they meet that challenge.

"I know, the list of things we need to do to stay competitive seems daunting. And it may be tough to get things done in the next two years, with a House led by Nancy Pelosi and a Senate led by Harry Reid.

"But I am optimistic about our future: Americans always rise to the occasion. Abigail Adams, in a letter to her son when he was concerned about America's future, said: 'great necessities call forth great virtues.' I have seen that time and again."

The Washington Post: "Outgoing Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, a successful businessman from a prominent Michigan Republican family, joined the 2008 sweepstakes yesterday, formally establishing a presidential committee and turning his attention to the substantial fundraising and organizational demands of a national campaign. ... With a new headquarters open for business in Boston, Romney plans to move into full-scale campaign activity immediately." (Dan Balz, "Romney Forms Presidential Committee, Focuses On Fundraising," The Washington Post, 1/4/07)

The National Journal's Marc Ambinder: "Ex-MA Gov. Mitt Romney released the first set of major donors who have agreed to help him raise millions of dollars for his presidential campaign. But one new name stands out: Ted Welch, the Tennessee investment banker who masterminded Sen. Lamar Alexander's (R-TN) $20 million haul in 1996 and who, since he was the RNC's finance chair in 1977, has been one of the party's most proficient and generous fundraisers." (Thomas Burr, "Huntsman Sr. Will Help Romney With Finances," The Salt Lake Tribune, 1/5/07)

Conservatives Praise Governor Romney's Strong Conservative Leadership:

Governor Bill Owens (R-CO): "I have been talking to the leading Republican candidates, and I like Mitt Romney. I think when your earlier caller was asking about somebody who has real substance, and I realize that some of us who are conservatives, there have been some questions. But I think that Mitt Romney's a conservative, and I think he can win." ("The Hugh Hewitt Show," http://hughhewitt.townhall.com, 1/4/07)

Governor Owens: "Well, I think he's one of the brightest people I've ever seen in public office. He's a businessman, he's a manager. He understands markets, he understands the private sector. He is a conservative, he wants to cut taxes. You know, he's a Republican who was elected in Massachusetts, which has about 12% of its voters who are Republican. He was able to win that election, and we saw what he did at the Olympics." ("The Hugh Hewitt Show," http://hughhewitt.townhall.com, 1/4/07)

What They're Saying About Governor Mitt Romney

Wednesday, Jan 03, 2007

Recent Praise Of Governor Mitt Romney's Commitment To Conservative Principles:

"I think he'd be great. The country needs to return to our core values."

Conservative Blogger Nathan Moore: "To say the least, Romney was impressive, and will be a formidable candidate for the 2008 nomination." (Nathan Moore's "MooreThoughts" Blog, "Massachusetts Governor In Tennessee," http://moorethoughts.com, 12/18/06)

Recent Praise Of Governor Mitt Romney's Strong Leadership In Massachusetts:

Wanda Andrade Of Brockton, Massachusetts: "He Does The Right Thing, And I Like People Who Do The Right Thing." "A number of voters said they admired the governor's morality. Wanda Andrade, 43, a Democrat and nursing assistant from Brockton, said she was a friend of Milena Del Valle, the woman who was killed in the Big Dig tunnel collapse. Andrade was moved by what she described as Romney's kindness to the family. 'They were poor people, and he responded right away,' she said. 'He does the right thing, and I like people who do the right thing.'" (Lisa Wangsness, "Voters Voice Regard, Regret Over Romney," The Boston Globe, 12/26/06)

Matt Hayes Of Brookline, Massachusetts: Governor Romney Turned Deficits Into Surpluses. "Matt Hayes, 31, an undeclared voter from Brookline who owns Jamaica Plain Auto Body, pointed out that Romney turned the state's deficits into surpluses, 'which the Democratic primary candidates were all fighting over how to spend.'" (Lisa Wangsness, "Voters Voice Regard, Regret Over Romney," The Boston Globe, 12/26/06)

Governor Mitt Romney In His Own Words:

Governor Romney On His Optimism That Americans Will Rise To The Occasion And Face The Great Challenges Of This Century: "'We are facing a tough challenge, but when you rise to the occasion and face it head on and do what's necessary to overcome it, you emerge stronger, and we are going to do that,' Romney said. 'One of the reasons I am convinced of that is I have looked at the source of America's strength, and I have seen it time and time again. The American people are the source of our strength.'" (Jennifer Feals, "Ready To Face The Challenge," Portsmouth NH Herald, 12/22/06)

Governor Romney On His Record Of Accomplishment In Massachusetts: "I've got a record. And people can look at my record and see, for instance, that when people were clamoring to raise taxes in Massachusetts, I said 'no' and we held the line on taxes, and held the line and borrowing, and we balanced our budget. They can see that I vetoed literally hundreds of line items in budgets because I thought there was too much spending. They can see that I fought for better schools. They can see that I fought for a better environment. And they can recognize that a lot what Ronald Reagan was doing I'm also doing. So I'm pretty proud to follow in his legacy, if you will, recognizing, of course, that there's some differences. He's just a lot better than anyone else I know." (Robert B. Bluey, "Q&A: Mitt Romney Discusses Iraq War, Reagan's Influence And Gay Marriage," Human Events, www.humanevents.com, 12/28/06)

Governor Romney On His Commitment To Traditional Marriage And Family: "I have always believed, and am confident of this, that marriage should be a relationship between a man and a woman. And that same-sex marriage is a mistake in course. I disagree with the Supreme Judicial Court of my state. I have said this before, I agree instead with all recorded history of human kind. Marriage should be a relationship between a man and a woman. At the same time, I am not in favor of discrimination against anyone in our country on the basis of sexual preference, or any other, gender or ethnicity, or faith." (Governor Mitt Romney, Remarks, Manchester, NH, 12/21/06)

Governor Romney: "Because in my view, if you think of marriage as an adult right, you're missing something. Marriage is not just an adult right. Marriage is primarily about the development and nurturing of children. And the development of a child is enhanced by having access to a mom and a dad. And therefore, as much as I feel that in America we should not discriminate against people, I also feel that marriage should be about a relationship between a man and a woman, and a child deserves a mom and a dad." (Governor Mitt Romney, Remarks, Manchester, NH, 12/21/06)

Governor Romney On Promoting A Culture Of Life: "I believe people will see that as governor, when I had to examine and grapple with this difficult issue, I came down on the side of life. I know in the four years I have served as governor I have learned and grown from the exposure to the thousands of good-hearted people who are working to change the culture in our country. I'm committed to promoting the culture of life. Like Ronald Reagan, and Henry Hyde, and others who became pro-life, I had this issue wrong in the past." (Kathryn Jean Lopez, "A Primary Factor," National Review Online, http://article.nationalreview.com, 12/14/06)

Governor Romney: "When I was running for office 12 years ago, there were a number of things that I said and felt at that time that, with the benefit of experience, I have a different view today. One of those is abortion. As governor, I've had several pieces of legislation reach my desk, which would have expanded abortion rights in Massachusetts. Each of those I vetoed. Every action I've taken as the governor that relates to the sanctity of human life, I have stood on the side of life. So talk is cheap, but action is real. And people can now look at my record." (Robert B. Bluey, "Q&A: Mitt Romney Discusses Iraq War, Reagan's Influence And Gay Marriage," Human Events, www.humanevents.com, 12/28/06)
