Romney: Iowa ruling 'against the will of the people'

By: Political Desk Managing Editor Steve Brusk

Thursday, Aug 30, 2007

"Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney, who faced the issue as governor of Massachusetts, criticized an Iowa district court ruling Thursday that said same-sex couples have the right to marry.

"A judge in Polk County, Iowa, said gay couples must be allowed to get married because of the state constitution's guarantee of equal treatment. The judge also struck a state law that banned same-sex marriages and said valid marriage is only between a male and a female."

"Romney, leading in the Iowa polls after courting conservative support, was the first candidate to react to the decision. In a statement, he said, 'The ruling is Iowa today is another example of an activist court and unelected judges trying to define marriage and disregard the will of the people as expressed through Iowa's Defense of Marriage Act. This once again highlights the need for a Federal Marriage Amendment to protect the traditional definition of marriage as between one man and one woman.'"...

Letter To The Editor: Want real leadership? Romney is your man

By: Gregory Blosser

Binghampton Press & Sun Bulletin

Thursday, Aug 30, 2007

"In an Aug. 29 letter, 'My wishes for president', the writer laments that there is no candidate that he wishes to run for president. His concerns include looking for one who governs all, not the few, among others. For that writer, I have just the candidate. His name is Mitt Romney.

"Gov. Romney has a strong, solid background that includes experience as a shrewd businessman with no links to any corruption or dishonesty, competently governing a state where his own party was outnumbered 7 to 2, and a reputation of dignity and leadership for all the people of his state, not just the elite.

"In just four years as governor of Massachusetts, Romney reformed the state's health care so that everyone has access to affordable coverage, without the insane tax hikes that the left wants. He also defended marriage and the will of the people against activist judges.

"Those who feel they can't find a man of honesty, integrity and leadership, I say look no further. And to think he comes from the same state as Ted Kennedy and John Kerry!"
