It sets a bad precedent to allow someone’s religion to be a factor in politics.
Reasons to agree:
- If evangelicals allow Romney’s religion to derail the candidacy of a brilliant, faithful, man of integrity like Governor Romney, is there any assurance -- any assurance at all -- that the very same reasoning won't be turned on evangelicals.
Reasons to agree:
- This reminds me of a great line from "A Man For All Seasons":
William Roper: So, now you give the Devil the benefit of law!
Sir Thomas More: Yes! What would you do? Cut a great road through the law to get after the Devil?
William Roper: Yes, I'd cut down every law in England to do that!
Sir Thomas More'': Oh? And when the last law was down, and the Devil turned 'round on you, where would you hide, Roper, the laws all being flat? This country is planted thick with laws, from coast to coast, Man's laws, not God's! And if you cut them down, and you're just the man to do it, do you really think you could stand upright in the winds that would blow then? Yes, I'd give the Devil benefit of law, for my own safety's sake!
Evangelicals may think Mormons are devils, but they need to be principled in their opposition to Mormons, or the enemies of evangelicals will have no reason to be principled in their opposition of evangelicalism.
2. It also reminds me of this by Rev. Martin Niemoller, 1945
First they came for the Communists,
and I didn't speak up,
because I wasn't a Communist.
Then they came for the Jews,
and I didn't speak up,
because I wasn't a Jew.
Then they came for the Catholics,
and I didn't speak up,
because I was a Protestant.
Then they came for me,
and by that time there was no one
left to speak up for me.
- We don't want to be like Iraq were sunni only vote for sunni, and Shia only vote for shia.
- We don't want to be like northern Ireland where prodestant only votes for prodestant and Catholic only votes for Catholic.
Reasons to disagree:
- We shouldn't generalize. When we are at war with radical Islam, it probably wouldn’t be a good idea to have a Muslim president.
