Mormons are members of a cult

Reasons to agree:

  1. The fact that Mormons don't tell investigators about their weird beliefs is problematic.
    1. Reasons to agree
      1. Just because Jesus was strategic in telling easy to believe stuff first, doesn't mean Mormons should try to hide the truth.
    2. Reasons to disagree
      1. Jesus said: "I gave you milk, not solid food, for you were not yet ready for it. Indeed, you are still not ready." He said this in context of not telling his believers all the parts of the gospel until they are ready for it.
  2. The belief of many Mormons in their leaders infallibility is near cult like. However, luckily, Mormon leaders never say anything very interesting, let alone scary.
    1. Reasons to agree
      1. It's all Oprah be nice to people all the time... Mormons acknowledge that leaders can make mistakes, but they say it never the kind of mistake that will hurt you to follow... It is sort of weird... they try to have it both ways... claiming to have Gods authority, but when they are proven wrong, saying that they never said they were infallible... Sort of like other churches...
  3. The primary definition of the word cult in most dictionaries is "a system of religious worship." Certainly, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints teaches a system of religious worship. They try their best to worship their Father in Heaven and his Only Begotten Son, Jesus Christ. They honestly think they are being good, doing what Jesus wants. They honestly think they are growing in their ability to love, and follow the commandments. Instead of looking that them as weirdos, who are our enemies, we should look at them as friends who need our help.
  4. There are different levels of bad "cults". Very bad ones result in suicide, like Jim Jones. Mormons aren't really bad, they probably stress too much about sin, but they really aren't hurting themselves much more than Catholics, or any other religion. They are, statistically, well educated about religion in general, but have not been told the truth about a lot of their religion. This is unfortunate, but it is better that people learn about Mormonism, by curiosity about Mitt Romney, out in the open, hearing news people talk about it in a an open, public dialogue, than privately with Mormon Missionaries.
  5. A Mormon president would not help Mormonism. Many Mormons don't know major portions of their history. Attention to Mormons will likely expose the church to problems of the church. If people start having real, accurate criticisms of Mormonism, that Mormons can not dismiss as inaccurate, then the Mormon church will probably suffer.
  6. Mormonism should rank low on the list of our problems. Alcohol, and Jersey Shore are a bigger threat to our future than Mormonism. Wikipedia will probably harm Mormonism more than any motivated group of anti-Mormons.

Reasons to disagree:

  1. The Mormon religion is over 150 years old, so it is not much of a cult....
  2. They are moving towards becoming a more mainstream religion.
  3. For every weird thing Mormons believe, you can point to something just as weird in the old testament.
  4. When most people use the term cult, they are referring to a group that promotes unhealthy, harmful practices to either its members or society in general. Sure, in general, Mormons might not be making life better for all their members, but it keeps some people away from alcoholism, and drugs.   For most people, when the word cult is used, scary images of mass suicides, human sacrifice, and the occult spring to mind. This, of course, is the intent of the critics who attempt to associate the Church with this negative term.
  5. The word cult means nothing specifically, because the word has so many different definitions. However, it does accomplish the verbal equivalent of spitting on someone's beliefs.
  6. If the Mormon Church was a cult they would be secretive about their acts and beliefs, but in fact there are 53,000 missionaries and 12 million members all over the world who will tell you all about Mormonism if you ask them... and even if you don't.
