"Presidential candidate Mitt Romney on Monday became the first Republican hopeful to personally address the Harris County GOP executive committee.

 

"The former Massachusetts governor promised to fight illegal immigration and radical Islam while championing education and strengthening the U.S. military.

 

"'If you elect me president, I will fight for Republican values,' he told the crowd gathered at the southwest campus of Houston Community College.

 

"Romney used part of his 15-minute visit to deride Democrats as the party that would lead the U.S. down 'a path of big government, big taxes; personal liberties infringed upon.'"

"Harris County Republican Party Chairman Jared Woodfill said Romney deserves credit for pulling the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City out of deficit. Romney also helped address security concerns at the Olympics in the aftermath of Sept. 11, 2001.
