"Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney stressed his conservative credentials during a presidential campaign visit to the capital Monday, calling for federal judges who oppose abortion and blaming Democratic President Bill Clinton for cutting the nation's military.

"'I am a solid, Republican conservative,' he told an applauding conservative audience of House Republicans at a luncheon speech a few blocks from the Capitol."

...

"He said later, regarding the appointment of judges who oppose abortion: 'I think not only in the appointment of judges, but in the development of law, it's important that you have somebody who shares your view on something like life.'"

...

"He said he supported Bush's 'troop surge' strategy in Iraq, but said the answer to 'radical jihadist' terrorism warranted a 'second Marshall plan' to modernize the Islamic culture.

"'We're going to have to change hearts and minds, as the saying goes, and I think one of the first things I'd want to do is to call a summit of nations, led not just by us, but by moderate Islamic states, and other leading nations of the world, to say: How can we help move Islam towards modernity?' he said.

"Romney also accepted Agriculture Commissioner Charlie Bronson's endorsement Monday, before flying to Sarasota to speak to a local party's Lincoln Day Dinner."
